Where Do Mold and Mildew Grow?

Last updated 4 years ago

Mold and mildew tend to grow in a moist environment where it has access to food and warmth, specifically between 40 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Unfortunately for homeowners, the preferences of mold and mildew describe most homes. If you know where mold and mildew like to grow, you are better able to prevent the growth from happening in the first place.

If you have experienced leaks in any of your pipes, walls, or roofs, you may be at risk for a mold problem. These leaks create a damp environment, where spores can reproduce. Even an overwatered houseplant can create a risk for mold. Mold and mildew typically grow in kitchens, basements, and bathrooms, as well as other rooms that are more prone to leaks, spills, or moisture. Be particularly careful about leaving crumbs or leftover food in damp areas, because mold and mildew only need two days of food, moisture, and room temperature conditions to grow.
