Your Guide to Interior Paint Finishes

Last updated 4 years ago

You might think you’re done once you pick out the right paint color for the inside of your home, but there are actually more decisions to make. The finish is almost as important as the color itself, and it can be just as overwhelming to pick. To make sure that your newly painted walls come out as you dreamed, you need to decide which paint finish to go with. Read below for an overview of the different paint sheens available so you can pick the right finish for your painting job.

Hard, ultra-shiny, and light-reflecting, high-gloss paint sheen is a great choice for areas that get a lot of hand traffic (cabinets, trims, and doors). High-gloss paint is typically too shiny for interior walls, so think accent with this finish.

As its name implies, semi-gloss paint is not as shiny as high-gloss but certainly glossier than most other finishes. A semi-gloss finish is great for areas where moisture, drips, and grease stains challenge the walls.

Often described as “velvety,” satin paints are very rich and smooth. They are easy to clean, which makes them ideal for high-traffic areas such as family rooms, foyers, and hallways.

Eggshell finish is names so because it has no shine and little luster, like a chicken’s egg. This finish covers imperfections well, but it is not durable enough for areas that get a lot of bumps and scuffs.

For an ultra-rich appearance, consider flat/matte paint. Flat/matte finishes soak up, rather than reflect, light and have the most pigment of any other type of finish. However, because flat/matte paint is tough to clean, it is not intended for kids’ bedrooms.
