Choosing a Color Scheme for Your Living Room

Last updated 4 years ago

Next to the kitchen and dining room, the living room is where you and your family spend most of your time together. This is also where you entertain quests and unwind after a long day at work. Considering how much time you spend in the living room, it’s important that you choose the perfect color scheme. Sometimes, all it takes is a couple layers of paint to revitalize a space and make you fall in love with your home all over again. Here are a few tips to help you choose the color of your new living room.

Match Color Scheme to Room Décor
Unless you are planning on completely redecorating your living room, start by choosing a color scheme from the largest pattern in the space. Look at such pieces as upholstered furniture, Oriental rugs, or large framed works of art and pluck colors you like from the pattern. This will help you achieve a unified design scheme without needing to purchase new furniture or accessories.

Go from Dark to Light Vertically
When painting with multiple colors, one of the safest ways to make your living room look great is to use darker colors for the floor, medium colors for the walls, and light values for the ceiling. Of course, you could think outside of the box and try to mix and match dark and light colors at different heights. It’s all about what works best given the size and layout of your living room.

Remember the 60-30-10 Rule
To achieve an effective interior color scheme, remember the rule of 60-30-10. Divide the colors in the space into components, with 60% dominant color, 30% secondary color, and 10% accent color. This will create a balanced yet visually interesting color scheme in your living room.
