How to Select the Right Paint Finish For Your Home's Interior

Last updated 4 years ago

You’ve finally chosen the right color for painting your San Luis Obispo home and now you’re left with one final decision: eggshell or satin? What’s the difference? Paint finish, or gloss, affects the paint’s durability, ease of application, and cleaning requirements. Below is an overview of different paint finishes and how to choose the best fit for your needs.

Flat (0 to 10% Gloss)
Flat finishes do not reflect much light, making them ideal for hiding surface imperfections such as dents. However, they are also the toughest to clean, particularly white colors. It’s likely that you will have to keep fine sandpaper and spare paint on hand for particularly difficult stains. They’re typically used in areas that are less prone to messes such as ceilings.

Eggshell (10 to 25% Gloss)
As the name suggests, eggshell finishes are slightly reflective, making them easier to clean and more durable. Eggshell paints are a popular choice for bedrooms and decorative walls.

Satin (25 to 35% Gloss)
Satin finishes are very similar to eggshell, and some manufacturers simply group the two together under one name. They are slightly more moisture-resistant and are popular in high-traffic areas such as hallways and kitchens.

Semi-Gloss (35 to 70% Gloss)
Semi-gloss paints are among the most durable types of paint finishes. They are particularly well-suited to areas that are prone to contact and dirt, such as window trim, doorways, and baseboards. Cleanup is as simple as scrubbing with a damp cloth.

High-Gloss (≥ 70% Gloss)
High-gloss paints are the shiniest and one of the most durable types of paint, but they will show every imperfection on your wall. They also require considerable surface preparation, so they are typically limited to decorative applications.

These are just a few of the considerations that our specialists at Browder Painting can help you address with your home painting project. To consult with a professional painter in San Luis Obispo, call (805) 544-0547 today.
